Members have told me they are noticing multiple copies of the same slip (all marked "Original") when using Auto-fill my return or when viewing slips through the Represent a Client Portal. This duplication creates quality control concerns for tax preparers, as it increases the risk of inadvertently reporting the same income multiple times or overlooking discrepancies between slips. In addition, the duplication could cause problems later for the CRA when it matches slips to reported amounts on the T1.
We reached out to the CRA to find out if they were aware of this issue and if they had advice for slip filers.
The following is the response we received:
"Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. The CRA has checks and balances in the system to prevent the update of duplicate information returns. However, a small number of these information returns may still be processed due to minor differences between them. The CRA will rectify these issues without further action from filers.
As a result, and to prevent processing delays, we ask filers to avoid submitting amendments to remove the duplicate returns. As a general practice, filers are encouraged to contact the CRA if they require an update on the processing status of the returns they have filed and to avoid submitting the same returns more than once.
While the CRA will rectify this issue, filers may still be contacted in certain situations if it cannot be conclusively determined that a particular return was duplicated."
