The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has been transitioning some individuals to online only mail. The CRA had transitioned individuals in two phases: Phase 1 started July 3 and involved individuals who were "benefit recipients" (500,000); Phase 2 started September 4 and involved individuals meeting certain other criteria (900,000).

We are not aware whether the planned transition to online-only mail was announced in advance. We reached out to the CRA to ask if additional individuals will be transitioned to online only mail.

    The following is their response:

"The selection of participants for this initiative was made with careful consideration. In Phase 1 (July 3), all participants were benefit recipients. For Phase 2 (September 4), we expanded the scope to include a targeted group of individuals who met specific eligibility requirements. These criteria included having an active CRA account with paper as the notification preference, a valid email address on file, and a recent sign-in within the last two years.

At this time, there are no plans to transition additional individuals from paper to online mail."
